Introductions

First off, my name is Erik and I am a Jr/Sr at BGSU. Currently, this blog is for my Sport and Gender class where we will be talking over the course of the semester about issues between sport and gender. The biggest issue that stands out in my mind is the issue of Title IX that was implemented to eliminate the problems of imbalance between male and female athletics.
Another topic that we discussed in class was our sport interests. To start with, growing up, I played many sports that include baseball, basketball, football, golf, bowling, and soccer. Throughout the years, I cut down that various types of sports that I participated in to baseball, basketball, and football at the competitive level. Of course, I still bowl here and there and golf with friends, but not at the competitive level. In high school I played football, baseball, and basketball, but cut off basketball after freshman year in order to focus on two sports and school. I enjoyed playing football, but my real success and enjoyment came in baseball. I was a 4 year letterman in baseball. I was offered several scholarships, but went to Marietta College to play at an institution that is known for its baseball program and National Championships. After a year there, i decided I wanted to major in Sport Management ; Therefore, I chose to attend BGSU. After coming here, I realized it would be tough to play ball and be successful in school as well, but I still play club baseball, which is more laid back and less time consuming than varsity athletics which takes a lot of stress off of me. Overall, I am happy with my decision.
Finally, the last topic of the introduction that was discussed was the male and female athletes we would choose to watch. For my male athlete I chose David Wright from the New York Mets because he is very talented and has a good head on his shoulders. He plays the game hard and there is never any news on him in the media about breaking the law or hurting someone. Also, he is a third basemen and that is the position that I play, so I like to model myself after him. As for the female athlete, I chose Anna Kournikova because she is a talented tennis player. Of course, being a male, part of the decision is due to her being very attractive. Most guys would love to see her in person because of her attractiveness. This was my introduction to the first day of class in Sport and Gender. Thank you.
